Curbside Collections
The following items are collected curbside on a weekly basis from Mentor
Residents on public streets: Rubbish, Bulk Items and Yard Waste. Materials
are collected by separate vehicles, and therefore, may be collected
at different times of the day (between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.)
on your scheduled day. All materials must be at the curbside the night
before your scheduled collection day, or by 7 a.m. the morning of collection,
to assure that they will be picked up. For program information contact
the Public Works Department at (440) 974-5780.
Rubbish & Recycling
The City of Mentor has awarded Waste Management Inc. a new garbage collection contract that takes effect January 1, 2007.
If residents are satisfied with the current size of their garbage containers you don¹t need to take any action. If you currently have one container and would like to increase to two containers (at an increased cost), call Waste Management at (800) 989-9278.
The City will continue to subsidize a large portion of the total cost of garbage collection. However, there will be a small increase over 2007 prices and this will be reflected in the first quarter 2008 invoice.
The City of Mentor has also awarded a contract to Waste Management for an optional curbside collection program for recyclable materials. This cost will be billed directly to residents that choose to participate. If a resident currently contracts with Waste Management for garbage collection the price for curbside recycling collection will be $1.64 per household per month for weekly service in 2008. If you are not a current garbage customer but want to subscribe to curbside recycling collection, the cost will be $2.50 per household per month for weekly service. All billing will be done quarterly.
Residents interested in subscribing to either of these services should call Waste Management at (800) 989-9278. Any other questions can be directed to the City’s Public Works Department at (440) 974-5780 or by emailing pubworks@cityofmentor.com.

Bulk Items
Bulk items can be disposed of on a weekly basis, along with your regular trash collection. Any items too large to pick up by one person (large appliances, furniture and lawn mowers) need to be scheduled in advance with Waste Management. A separate truck will pick these items up and may come at a different time than the garbage truck; however, they will come on your regular collection day. Waste Management can be reached by calling (800) 343-6047.
Appliances with refrigerants need to have the Freon removed, and the
appliance needs to be properly tagged by a certified technician. If
you can’t find a certified technician – for a fee –
Waste Management will pick up the item with the refrigerant still in
it. You may also, for a fee, dispose of items with refrigerant at the
Lake County Landfill. To contact the Lake County Landfill call (440)
350-2643.
If an item contains gasoline, oil or any other flammable liquid, it
will need to be removed prior to collection.
Yard Waste
Mentor’s yard waste collection program runs from the first full
week in April through the last full week in December. Items included
in this collection are grass, leaves, garden trimmings, brush, twigs
and sticks. Items not included are dirt, rocks, or lumber.
Residents may put out 12 units of yard waste on their regular collection
day from April through the end of October. The unit limit is increased
to 25 units per week, from the last full week of October through the
last full week of December. A unit is a paper yard waste bag, a trash
can (up to 30 gallons in size), or one bundle of sticks. Bundles of
sticks are to be no heavier than 30 lbs. with sticks no longer than
4 feet in length and no thicker than 3 inches in diameter.
The current contractor for this service is Republic Waste Services. They can be reached at (800) 869-4131.
